Check rising fuel costs

With the price of gas spiking again, and expected to rise even higher, it's a good time to consider ways of getting more from every litre you put into the tank. As an added benefit, picking up these fuel saving tips will make you a better driver and preserve the resale value of your vehicle.
Ease off the gas pedal. How you drive has a bearing on gas consumption. Slow down, maintain a steady speed and get more distance per litre of gas. A European study concludes the practice of constant speeding and stopping in traffic only saves about one minute of travel time in each half hour. But the resulting increase in fuel consumption amounts to an eye-popping 37 percent.
Idle and burn. Try not to idle your vehicle for more than 20 seconds. Shutting off and re-starting the engine consumes less fuel than idling. It's also less damaging to the environment. If you’re going to be stopped for more than 20-30 seconds (except in traffic), turn off the vehicle and restart when you’re ready to drive again.
Service your vehicle. It may be tempting to hold back on scheduled maintenance. But it will likely cost more in the long run. A well maintained vehicle with properly inflated tires uses less fuel. Regular maintenance extends the life of a vehicle and helps maintain its resale value.
Plan trips. Plan driving routes and consolidate trips. Whenever possible, avoid high-traffic areas and heavy volume times. Find one location where you can take care of banking, grocery shopping and other errands. You'll save money and have more time for other things.
Check the weight. The more you carry, the more you pay. Lighten the load and get more from a litre of gas. Clean out the trunk and cargo areas. Remove roof racks when not in use to reduce wind resistance. When you do carry a heavy load, try and distribute the weight evenly and make sure the tires are properly inflated.

Through her work with War Child Canada she is directly involved in efforts to provide humanitarian support to war-torn families and promoting the rights of children.

War Child works with children and their families to overcome the challenges of living with, and recovering from, conflict. In collaboration with local people, War Child aims to increase access to education, lift families out of poverty, and create a protective environment for the rights of children.

Cut back on garbage

Metro Vancouver produces nearly a million tonnes of garbage every year. Garbage from residents (houses, apartments and condos) makes up nearly a third of the region’s waste. In an effort to reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills, Metro Vancouver has set some new recycling targets. And while the new benchmarks put the emphasis on recycling, you can also help reduce the amount of waste by simply using less paper and plastic.
- Carry your own cup for coffee, tea and other beverages.
- Buy a stainless steel water bottle and fill it with tap water. (Next time you buy bottled water, check the source. It may be tap water from another city.)
- Buy food in bulk, and use cloth bags to carry your groceries home.
- Reduce the amount of paper you print from your computer.
- When you do print documents, use both sides of the paper.
- Subscribe to online billing for phone, cable, hydro and other utility bills.
- Donate used items to charities and organizations that refurbish and recycle.

BC spawns global event

It started 31 years ago with a small group of outdoor enthusiasts rafting on the Columbia River, cleaning out debris they encountered along the way. By trip's end, the huge pile of garbage convinced the rafting party to create an annual event to clean up and restore rivers.
Coordinated by the Outdoor Recreation Council, BC Rivers Day is an annual province-wide happening that seeks to raise public understanding of rivers and the benefits they provide. Locally organized events from the Bulkley Valley to Burnaby draw people from all walks of life to the cause of protecting and celebrating rivers, streams and waterways.

Following the lead of the BC Rivers Day proclamation, the United Nations created World Rivers Day to celebrate and encourage active involvement in promoting the sustainability of rivers.

For the last weekend of September, here are some local and regional Rivers Day events.
Artists on the River, Sept 23 & 24, Westminster Quay, New Westminster. Fraser River Discovery Centre hosts this popular outdoor arts and environmental festival with artist exhibits and live entertainment on the Quay boardwalk. Inside the FRDC, a see the unveiling of a new Fraser River display.
Shoreline Cleanup, Sept 24, False Creek, Vancouver. Coordinated by Fraser Riverkeeper, a volunteer group dedicated to the conservation of the Fraser River and its watershed, the cleanup starts at 1pm from Science World. Volunteers can register at fraserriverkeeper.ca.
Guichon Creek Celebration, Sept 25, BCIT Burnaby Campus. From 11am-3pm, enjoy a farmers market, live entertainment, planting native vegetation, gold panning, a catch and release fish pond, and community displays.
Kanaka Connections, Sept 25 at Kanaka Creek Regional Park, Maple Ridge. Celebrate BC Rivers Day with canoe tours of Kanaka Creek, children's activities and stewardship displays at this free, drop-in event from 11am to 3pm.

Often called B.C.'s best little fair, the 107th Fall Fair and annual corn fest theme is "Something to Crow About." It takes place Friday evening and all day Saturday. Included in the activities are a parade, stage entertainment, midway, corn husking, livestock, 4-H exhibits, antique tractor pull, farmers market and much more. The traditional crowning of the Corn King or Queen happens on Saturday. This is a country fair with fun and entertainment for the whole family. Admission for Saturday is $5-$7 for adults, $2 for children. Plenty of free parking.

Features a farmers market with locally grown food from city lots and valley farms. It's a family event with kid's crafts, interactive displays, canning demonstrations, food vendors, an artisan market and pony rides. Admission is $3 for adults, and $2 for kids and seniors. Monday, September 5, historic Burnaby Village Museum offers free admission for the family with games, contests, entertainment and much more during this one-day fall festival. Get harvest hints at the Love Farmhouse, play a game of croquet, and let the kids get into a watermelon eating and corn shucking contest. The entertainment is free and so are the carousel rides.

Through September, the museum offers guided site tours every Saturday. You can choose between the Discovery Tour or the Field to Fork Tour… or do both! The Discovery Tour (11:30am-12:15pm) takes you through some of the museum's hidden gems and offers a history of Burnaby through the lens of the village. Field to Fork (12:30pm-1:15pm) is a hands-on family program that gets down and dirty in the Love Farmhouse vegetable patch while learning about the farming communities in Burnaby. Learn more about waste reduction at a screening of the Clean Bin Project, June 7 at (Bob Prittie) Metrotown Library. In keeping with the theme of Environment Week, the documentary about a local couple's quest to live waste free. Partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least landfill garbage in an entire year. The award winning film takes on a serious topic and presents it with with optimism, humour, and inspiration for individual action. Arnold Shives has been a practicing artist for nearly five decades. Throughout his career he has explored various media in connection with the mountainous environment of British Columbia. Over the course of the artist’s 67 years, he has scaled several peaks, from the Cascades to the Garabaldi Range, and numerous ranges in between. From these spectacular vantage points, Shives has sketched and contemplated his place within these unique and awe-inspiring environments.
